Overview
Flourishing Blossoms is an immersive floral XR experience created with Chance 3D for Guangzhou Fashion Week — a pro-bono showcase piece exploring what the spatial-AR pipeline I'd built for cultural-tourism deployments could feel like in a fashion and luxury-brand context. As solo technical lead, I ported the Immersal + 8th Wall + Three.js architecture from outdoor cultural activations to the fashion-week venue, handling all field work, spatial mapping, runtime engineering, and on-site operations. Chance 3D led the creative concept, environmental design, and the floral visual language.
What I Built
- Spatial map of the venue. On-site capture and Immersal map construction so the floral environment could be anchored persistently to the physical space rather than floating in world space.
- Browser AR runtime. 8th Wall as the delivery surface — install-free access consistent with how fashion-week audiences expect to encounter activations, no app download required.
- Immersive floral rendering. Three.js for the atmospheric floral environment: reactive lighting, particle effects, and layered visual depth on top of the SLAM-anchored anchor points.
- Field operations. On-site positioning testing and live support during the showcase itself.
Technical Solutions
- Reusing the cultural-tourism pipeline deliberately. The same Immersal + 8th Wall + Three.js stack I'd built for the Taihe Lake activation transferred directly. The architecture was already proven for outdoor multi-point SLAM anchoring; adapting it to an indoor venue meant recapturing the spatial map and tuning the anchor density for a smaller, more controlled environment.
- Showcase as proof-of-concept. The real technical question was whether a pipeline optimised for outdoor lakeside trails — long sightlines, variable lighting, crowd density — could carry creative weight in the tighter, more controlled context of a fashion-week space. It did. The same field-capture and calibration workflow applied with minimal modification.
Why It Matters
Showcase projects do work that paid client engagements cannot: they let a team explore a brief without constraints and put work in front of audiences a paid project might never reach. Flourishing Blossoms demonstrated that the spatial-AR pipeline I'd developed for outdoor cultural-tourism contexts translates to fashion — and that XR, presented well, can land with an audience that doesn't usually encounter it. The same engineering muscle that anchors cultural moments to a lakeside trail can anchor a floral installation to a fashion-week venue.
